Manchester United will buy a goalkeeper in the summer, that much is clear. Who it will be is the question, but if we are to believe reports from Spain and other sources, United have had a bid accepted for the 20 year old Spaniard, David de Gea.

He has been nicknamed by his Athletico Madrid team mates as "van der gea" due to his resemblance to the current, and soon to retire Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der sar. He is tall, agile, commanding and holds the invaluable quality of being able to keep calm under pressure. It is these sorts of qualities that Sir Alex Ferguson desires to replace his current number 1 and avoid the repetition of the last goalkeeping 'crisis' when Peter Schmeichel left United.

The United manager would also be hopeful to avoid the situation that Arsenal have suffered over the past five years - lacking a commanding, regular, consistent goalkeeper. Arsenal have recently received good news on this front, with another United target Maarten Stekelenburg being quoted as saying: "If an offer from Arsenal arrives, I will leave."

So with David de Gea being reported as United's top target, it is time to have a look at what United fans should expect from him. 29 games this season has seen him keep 9 clean sheets while saving a total of 121 shots. Compared to van der sar, his statistics are not all to bad. The United goalkeeper has played 28, kept 12 clean sheets and made a total of 67 saves. I suggest the statistics are heavily effected by the quality of the defences, but they are interesting nevertheless. Watch highlights of De Gea below:

What Does Carrick Deal Mean For United Transfers?

News that Michael Carrick signed a new Manchester United contract wasn't the most popular news among United fans, not least because he has had a below average season so far, in a pretty average and uncreative midfield.

The majority of United fans on forums have been raging with the news with comments like:

"F***ing hell, his demeanor on the pitch this season suggests he can't be arsed. There was a time a few months ago where it looked like he was protesting on the pitch but generally being a ****."

"Chelsea are rebuilding, and so must we. City will be stronger too. Next season, genuinely, we could be left behind if we don't improve the 11"

"We're doomed"

"F***ing joke of a midfield player for best part of 2 seasons"

"They must have a plan - a new plan - that he fits into somehow"

So why has Sir Alex Ferguson not seen what United fans are seeing? Does Ferguson think Carrick would be better than new signings - fresh-faced, skilful, creative and imaginative players who would rejuvenate a current old, fragile centre midfield.
Well, Sir Alex had this to say:

"I am delighted Michael has signed a new contract."

"He has been outstanding since joining us from Tottenham in 2006. He is a true professional and it is great he has committed his future to the club.”

Perhaps Sir Alex knows that no large funds will be available in the summer to sign any big name, top quality, proven players. Or perhaps the United manager is sticking to his understandable and obvious claim that there is no value in the market. When £25 million for, at best, good players are happening every other week because bottomless pits of money are available at certain clubs, inflation is out of control. United don't have that sort of money.

Expect more signings like the astute ones of  Javier Hernandez and Chris Smalling. Manchester United scouts will have been sent out to search for midfielders that could, in the future, replace the likes of Paul Scholes and maybe even Owen Hargreaves who's injuries seem unfortunately endless. Players will be signed in the summer, but they will be young, and not in high demand - possible risks, unproven atPremier League level.

Manchester United have been linked to Alexis Sanchez, the Chilean winger playing for Udinese. The club have announced that a bid of close to £30 million was offered to them, with a completion due to go ahead in the summer. Udinese refused to identify the bidders.

United will be bidding for a goalkeeper in the summer, I'm sure we can assume that much in confidence. Again, the cheapest option is most likely to be considered - in this case, Maarten Stekelenburg of Ajax who is apparently worth around £10 million as opposed to other targets such as Manuel Neur and David de Gea, who's asking prices will be considerably higher.

United have been linked to several midfielders as they scour the globe to find a replacement for Scholes, including Nuri Sahin, Steven Defour and Marek Hamsik - all would cost at least over £10 million, with the highest valuation being around £35 million for Hamsik.
Perhaps it would be better to give some young players from the reserve team a go - there are certainly some talents in there, with Tom Cleverley, who was on loan at Wigan and Paul Pogba impressing. Pogba may be too young at the moment, but I would like to see more of Cleverley, but it looks very likely that Ferguson will be looking for a new play maker in the market this summer despite news of Carrick's contract extension.

Sir Alex Wants Stekelenberg at Man United

Rene Meulensteen, the Manchester United first team coach has reportedly stated that the Dutch goalkeeper, Maarten Stekelenburg is top of Sir Alex Ferguson's transfer target list for the summer as they look to replace the retiring Edwin van der sar.

United have been linked to several goalkeepers including David de Gea, Manuel Neur and even Liverpool's Pepe Reina, but according to Meulensteen, Stekelenburg is the priority:

"Stekelenburg is indeed a keeper who is at the top of our wanted list,"

"We naturally talk a lot among ourselves about who should replace Van der Sar. Alex Ferguson has spoken about Stekelenburg with Edwin, and that does not seem strange to me at all."

After having so much trouble in finding a replacement for Peter Schmeichel after he left United, Ferguson is understandably eager to sign a goalkeeper similar to his most recent successful buy, van der sar.

Stekelenburg and Van der Sar both began their career at Ajax - the club where Stekelenburg currently plays with around 186 appearances. During the 2006 World Cup, Stekelenburg was the understudy to Van der Sar while in the 2010 World Cup, Stekelenburg was the number one goalkeeper, and helped his country get to the final - conceding only five goals in the process. He did unfortunately end up on the losing side.
They also both have a large frame - with Van der Sar standing at 6 foot 6 inches, while Stekelenburg stands at 6 foot five and a half.

Despite the signing of Danish keeper Anders Lindegaard, Ferguson is looking for a proven, top quality, goalkeeper with experience in big competitions such as the Champions League. He has a pool of talent to choose from, and he will certainly do his best to get his decision right as he tries to avoid a repeat of the last time their number one left.

Kuszczak Wants to Play - Or Leave United

It looks like Manchester United will definitely be looking for a new goalkeeper this summer after their number two keeper said that he will leave Old Trafford if he isn't made the first choice after van der sar retires.

United have already signed Anders Lindegaard from Norwegian club Aaeslund, and the Danish international will officially join this month. However, Sir Alex Ferguson has been linked to a number of other goalkeepers to replace Edwin van der sar in the United goal, including Maarten Stekelenburg, Manuel Neur and David de Gea, with at least one of them sure to join the Red Devils. Therefore, Tomasz Kuszczak will find it increasingly hard to gain a first team spot at all.

The Polish keeper said:

"Of course I would like regular football. I need to see what the boss wants to do, whether he wants to play me or sell me. But definitely I want to play."

"Every player has his ambitions and I have mine. I have sat on the bench for five years and I need a chance to play more than one game in two or three months. You can’t prove anything like that."

It must be frustrating to see new players coming in and taking a place that you have worked for and waited for for so long - five and a half year in Kuszczak's case, and with only 22 appearances in his time at the club, his patience is obviously wearing thin. The 28 year-old started his first game this season in a rare occasion against his former club, West Brom, but the occasional starts here and there, sometimes in the Carling Cup or F.A Cup will not be enough to persuade him to stay, especially with young Ben Amos coming through the ranks.

His career isn't looking very stable at United, and his departure would guarantee Ferguson going into the market for a new goalkeeper.

Manchester United Won't get Liverpool's Reina

Apart from the obvious reluctance from the Liverpool manager to let arguably his most consistent player, Pepe Reina leave - especially for one of Liverpool's biggest rivals in Manchester United, the "Red Devils" simply wouldn't be willing to involve themselves in a big transfer tussle involving a large sum of money that they just don't have.

Hodgson said

 “If [Sir Alex] Ferguson is looking around at the end of the season and he has got lots of money to replace van der Sar, he might very well want Pepe Reina because he is the best around.

“But we do not want to sell him. I would like to think that we are going to become a successful club once again and Pepe is crucial to that.

“We have heard nothing from Manchester United and, more to the point, we don’t want to hear anything from Manchester United."

Hodgson obviously doesn't want to let his star player go - and with good reason. He is "crucial" for Liverpool's success and it was only six months ago he signed a six year contract to stay at the club. Reina knows how much Hodgson and Liverpool value him, and how much they want him to stay. Unless there is a "secret get out clause" in his contract, (which I very much doubt that there is - or if there is I very much doubt that Reina would take advantage of it) only then would Liverpool have to let the player go.

I believe that Manchester United would be very unwilling to create a big story involving the chase for Reina, nor do I believe that Reina wants to leave Liverpool. I know that Liverpool don't want to let him go, and I know that Manchester United have limited funds to buy big players and pay big wages to them, especially considering the mass increase in their current players wages.
All points considered, Reina doesn't seem likely to join Manchester United. The Dutchman Maarten Steklenburg seems a far more likely choice for United - as I have reported on before, Here http://bit.ly/chVKBD.

Manchester United & Arsenal do Battle for Dutch Goalkeeper.

The two biggest clubs in English football will go to battle with the objective of signing a player who would fill a current, or future troubling position of goalkeeper. This man is Maarten Stekelenburg.

The 28-year-old would, at Manchester United, be able to replace Edwin Van der Sar at the end of the current 2010/11 season, as it is widely thought that the veteran will retire at the age of 40 years. Sir Alex Ferguson has been delighted with his current goalkeeper, and even admitted that he should have signed Van der Sar earlier in his career. There is no suprise then, that the Scot will look for a similar replacement.

Both Stekelenburg and Van der Sar began their career at Ajax - the club where Stekelenburg currently plays - with around 165 appearances. During the 2006 World Cup, Stekelenburg was the understudy to Dutch number one, Van der Sar. However in the most recent of World Cup's, Stekelenburg was the number one goalkeeper, and helped them get to the final - conceding only five goals in the competition, however he ended up on the losing side as they lost to Spain.

A reliable goalkeeper is also just what Arsenal need at the moment. Almunia and Fabianski don't exactly ooze confidence and the fans support for them is slightly lacking, as they begged their team manager to buy a new goalkeeper through the summer. Unfortunately for the fans, and fortunately for the goalkeepers, their pleas fell on deaf ears, as Wenger seems to trust his blundering goalkeepers.

With a whole season for the two keepers to make bad mistakes, Wenger will most probably be looking for a new goalkeeper toa ppease his fans, and Stekelenburg is said to be on top of the Frenchmans list.

The Ajax coach Martin Jol dmitted that there was interest from the clubs in his goalkeeper, but that it was "not strange" for United and Arsenal to want to buy his number one.
